Maha Hanna M.D, IBCLC, was born in Beirut, Lebanon a middle child to a family of 5 children. At the age of 14, after enduring 3 years of a violent civil war, her family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Cupertino, California.

After finishing her medical training in 1996, she began working

for Stanford-Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) at various Community Hospital partners. This included a 17-year stretch at Washington hospital in Fremont as an attending neonatal hospitalist. She took care of extremely premature infants and their families on their long journey to maturity and followed them as they developed through their first 3 years of life. During this period she developed her breastfeeding support skills and helped the mothers achieve breastfeeding success by the time their infants were ready to be discharged home. The next 9 years, she moved to John Muir Hospital (JMH) in Walnut Creek to help establish a robust Pediatric Hospitalist program with the support of a JMH-LPCH joint venture. The program provided inpatient pediatric care with the support of Stanford pediatric sub-specialists. She contributed her expertise to help get JMH to Baby Friendly certification. In her work with JMH’s Women’s and Children's Services, she worked to help nurses improve their lactation support skills and developed a tutorial to help mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals by reducing nipple trauma and pain.

As she transitions away from hospital-based work, she is excited to join our group to continue her passion in working with mothers to achieve their breastfeeding goals and to provide coaching in their new and exciting journey as parents.
